What is Ortho-Bionomy?
In brief Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle, non-invasive, system of healing that reminds the body of its natural ability to restore balance. It’s founder Dr Arthur Lincoln Pauls, focused on principles which are based on a simple and profound philosophy: allow the body to correct itself
An Ortho-Bionomy session is a respectful and comfortable “hands-on” experience. The gentle techniques used (light touch, gentle movements, comfortable positioning, brief compression & subtle contact) activate self-corrective nerve reflexes, relaxing & allowing the body to regain its original patterns of health and wellness.
The individual is empowered to participate in their own recovery, and through the process can begin to rediscover the ability to heal and restore comfort, ease and balance back into their body.
The result is seemingly effortless pain & tension relief, natural re-alignment & relaxation, and a deep sense of physical & emotional well-being as the body remembers its natural ability to seek balance by moving from pain to comfort.
The hallmark of Ortho-Bionomy is pain relief.
Which conditions can Ortho-Bionomy help with?
Ortho-Bionomy is successfully used to help people with a variety of health complaints including :
- Injuries: joint restrictions and dysfunction, muscle pain or injury, whiplash, repetitive strain injuries.
- Chronic pain and conditions: chronic neck and back pain, frozen shoulder, migraines, TMJ issues, ongoing pain not addressed by conventional treatments.
- Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue.
- Structural imbalances: joint discomfort, post surgery rehabilitation, scoliosis and kyphosis (curvatures of the spine), leg length discrepancies.
- Stress-related symptoms: general aches, pain or fatigue, disrupted sleep patterns, physical conditions associated with emotional imbalances such as depression, boundary issues or trauma.
Who can benefit from Ortho-Bionomy?
Ortho-Bionomy is suitable for people of all age, from new born infants to elderly.
Ortho-Bionomy Practitioners are highly skilled, c.ompetent professionals who adhere to a strong code of ethics and high standards of practice.
An Ortho-Bionomy Session is typically one hour long and is conducted on a massage table.
The number of sessions required depends on the clients needs, which are assessed in the first session. With most conditions generally 2 to 4 sessions are recommended with suggestions for ongoing self care. Remember to wear comfortable clothing for your session.
“I am passionate about this work and continue to study and expand my knowledge and practice of Ortho-Bionomy. My clients are amongst my greatest teachers.”
“Because Ortho-Bionomy works with the body, gently encouraging the nervous system to relax, and facilitating the body to find its own ways to realign and heal, many serious and chronic conditions are resolved or greatly improved. It is also safe to use with babies and the very frail.”
The Development of Ortho-Bionomy
Arthur Lincoln Pauls
Ortho-Bionomy® was developed in the 1970’s by Dr Arthur Lincoln Pauls, a Canadian Osteopath and Judo Master. Dr Pauls wanted to work with the original principles of Osteopathy; the body’s self-correcting and self healing capacities. He was inspired by Dr Lawrence Jones method of “Spontaneous Release by Positioning” (later called “Strain and Counterstrain”). Dr Pauls combined the structural principles from Osteopathy with his appreciation of the energetic and philosphical concepts from the Martial Arts and Homeopathy to create and evolve Ortho-Bionomy.Dr Pauls found ways of working with the body by exaggerating the body’s preferred postures, thereby permitting the body’s self-healing process to create greater balance and alignment. He discovered that by working WITH the body and not against it, the body could find balance on its own without having to use force to correct it.
Dr Pauls described how Ortho-Bionomy works this way: “Injury or disease result from what I call ‘misunderstanding’. Ortho-Bionomy brings understanding to the person, so that he or she may respond appropriately, rather than by habit or fear.”
Dr Pauls began teaching this work in the US in 1976, and has taught Ortho-Bionomy extensively throughout Europe, USA, Canada, Japan, South America, New Zealand and Australia.
Dr Pauls first presented his work in Australia in 1976, and today Ortho-Bionomy has a growing number of qualified Practioners in each state. (see http://www.ortho-bionomy.org.au/a-brief-history/).
The term “Ortho-Bionomy” comes from “ortho” meaning correct or straight, “bio” meaning life, and “nomy” meaning the laws of or study of. Dr. Pauls defined the term then as “the correct application of the laws of life.” He stated “[Ortho-Bionomy] is really about understanding your whole life cycle. Naturally, we focus on the structure because that is the literal skeleton upon which our life is built. When your structure works right, your circulation works better, you feel better, you think better.” (Kain and Berns, 1992)
